Dear Honda...
When installing the oil filter at the factory, please hand tighten the filter. There’s no need to over-do it. It just makes me much less satisfied.
Also, please make an engine with the filter in a more accessible location. Having to buy new socket extensions, different filter wrenches, and other miscellaneous items is unnecessary and frustrating.
I greatly appreciate you making a 15...
Tempo!
As Rach mentioned, it was HOT here today. So, no run outdoors. 90’s is where I draw the line.
But, I did get in a great tempo run. I can tell my fitness is coming along, because it was much better than my last.
5 easyish miles at about 7:45 pace, then 5 tempo miles at about 6:30 pace. That’s my fastest tempo run pace ever, and I felt good! It was definitely hard, but felt like a...
Trail running!
I really enjoy it, and it’s even better getting to RunWithRach!
After running yesterday morning, then helping my dad get some work done in the yard, then being outside at the pool all afternoon… we crashed early last night! 8:30 bed times make 5:30 alarms easier to tolerate.
Now we get to relax on a breakfast date at Panera without kids chattering. Win!
Bummer...
The half marathon I was planning on doing next weekend is cancelled.
So… need to find a race doppelganger!
The other thing the heat does...
Is zap you for the next day.
My 11 miles yesterday made my run this morning tough. I cut it to 5 miles, and may try to get in a few more lately.
That’s alright… still winning!

And you can see more of your beautiful wife and kids!
Amen!
Benefit to working from home...
I can work a little late (until 6:00) and still be done about the time I would have been home from my old job (between 6:00 and 6:30) where I commuted about 45 minutes each way.
I’m spoiled…
Hot!
When this time of the year rolls around, I try to remind myself that running in this heat has to change your perspective.
No more 10 mile runs without water. Easy runs require more effort. And the earlier you get the run over with, the better.
This morning, 11 miles was pretty tough again. Our 8:05 pace or so felt much faster. I tend to believe the heat makes you add about 30 seconds per mile...

do you carry water in your hand or on a belt?
In the summers here, even early in the morning, I have to have access to water. It can be 80+ in the morning with humidity nearing 100%. That’s not pleasant, no matter the pace.
My favorite handheld is this:
It has a small pocket in the hand strap, so it can hold some gels, a key,...
Slogging through...
First nine miles… great. Felt easy, and kept a good easy pace. Last two miles? Not so much. I ran out of water and energy at about the same time. But, didn’t crash too bad and finished at a decent pace.
Overall, still a great way to start a Thursday. 11 miles in about 1:29.
10 more miles...
I hopped on the treadmill tonight to get in the 10 miles for the day.
Some might say running on the treadmill isn’t good when you can run outside. But, when I’m trying to run some kind of hard workout and it’s hot and humid… no thank you. I’ll stay indoors.
Anyway, started off with 5 easy miles, then 3 at half Marathon pace (6:40), then 2 easy. Not bad… but...
Coincidence?
I ran this morning… and my headache is gone. 8 miles done.
Coincidence? I think not.
But… I think a lot of the issue was just continued dehydration. I need to stay on top of it, so I’m going to do my 100 ounce challenge, where I try to consume 100 ounces of water a day, not including the water I drink immediately before, during, or after the run.
Have a great Monday!
It's way too early...
For this headache.
Great birthday present!
We’re showing the house any minute… how cool would it be to sell the house on my birthday???
I’m sure it’s just wishful thinking, but it would be nice to finally have this part of our lives done.
Treadmills suck!
I was 7.something into the run, rolling along (sucking wind) at half marathon pace… all of the sudden…
The treadmill shuts off.
From 9mph to a stop in a second. Ouch.
This treadmill has a history of problems with me. It does this quite often. I think it overheats and triggers an emergency shut off. It won’t turn back on for 5 to 10 minutes after that.
I was hungry, out of...

More Volume - Week 1
Back when I was more seriously training (early 2011 and prior), I did “weekly reports” to put my training out there and hold me accountable.
It serves a few purposes. First, like I mentioned above, it holds me accountable. If I come on here and start posting weeks with less than 50 miles, please give me a hard time. Any kind of mileage is good… but I know that I need consistent...
It's a good sign...
That I ran this morning and felt great…
But I still feel like I NEED to put in more miles tonight.
Patience… It will come.

Nice mileage. No pain these days?
Not to jinx it, but I’m relatively injury free. My right hip issue has resolved itself (more or less), and nothing else is hurting.
The key will be to keep it easy with the extra mileage, and minimize the amount of hard running I do until I’ve settled into it.
Good news!
I wasn’t attacked by a bear this morning!
They caught the bear last night (tranq’ed him out of a tree into a kid’s bounce house… true story), so I ran in that direction this morning. All was well.
It was muggy and warm, but temps slightly lower than yesterday.
10 more miles down. Now I can relax in a chair the rest of the day!
It's awesome...
To be able to share running with your spouse… to have something that’s a part of who you both are, something you have in common and can understand about each other.
However, there’s a significant negative:
When your spouse starts looking at the race calendar and snagging some of the races you want to do! Time to fight!

You can run 5 more with me tonight on the River Trail. Mo miles, mo miles, mo miles!
I would be up for that but there’s something wrong with driving 50 miles (round trip) to run 5!
You guys should come run Toad Suck this weekend.
Mo' miles...
I wasn’t feeling very well this morning, but I still enjoyed an easy 5ish miles with just a little bit of kick at the end.
During lunch break, I made up for the skipped miles with 5ish in the rain/heat with my bride.
More miles in the foundation… 10.5 for the day. Good stuff!
More miles...
I slept a little later than I should have this morning, but I eventually made it out for my 10 miles.
It was still a bit humid, and I was a little tired, but it was a great morning for a run! I got it done and don’t have to worry the rest of the day trying to fit it in later.

thats what happens when your not salary arbitration eligible, or can be a free agent. If Freese keeps it up and can stay healthy, his pay day is coming.
If only you could fill a team with the likes of David Freese, Bo Hart, and Stubby Clapp.
And as a side note...
Is it bad that I’m happy Pujols is hitting just .222 for the year? 0 homers, just 4 RBI’s, and slugging .319.
As a comparison, Carlos Beltran, while batting just .265, has 5 homers, 10 RBI’s, and is slugging .500.
It’s sad what $13 million (for Beltran) and $12 million (for Pujols) will buy you. Why???
And then, let’s look at David Freese. He’s hit 4 home...
Nerding out...
